Style Series Part 8: Savvy Studio

8

Last up on our Style Series for Summer 2015 is the Savvy Studio, a quirky mash-up of mid-century modern and minimalism. This trend features a brighter mid-century inspired palette and quirky shapes and patterns. The style thrives on mixing and matching geometrics, florals, and solids to bring life into smaller spaces – without taking too much space at all!

Popular amongst college age folk and those looking for a way to express their individuality in a more classic way, this trend isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Is it right for you? See below to find out!

1. You were an avid watcher of shows like Mad Men and movies like Catch Me if You Can, but have a soft spot for quirky kid’s shows like Minions and Inside Out.

2. Your home is a rented studio apartment, or even one bedroom apartment, where the space is limited, the walls are white, and the flooring can’t be changed.

3. Prints, prints, and more prints! Chevrons, stripes, florals, even cute vintage inspired tees are part of your wardrobe – and decor. However, you may not be a big fan of abstracts.

4. Statement shoes and necklaces are a staple of your wardrobe.

Untitled-2

If this looks like something you would wear, the Savvy Studio may be your cup of tea!

5. Yellow may be your favorite color. Or mustard.

6. Your planters may be in the shape of dinosaurs, or birds, and succulents are your plants of choice.

These succulent planters from TheGnakedGnome might be right up your ally!

7. Even if your walls are white, you are ready to invest in some temporary wallpaper or decals for some added pizzazz.

8. While you like to experiment with color, print, and silhouette, you want your decor to reflect cleanliness and order. With this decor style, you know what to expect!

Untitled-1

Create a mid-century-mod, minimalist setting with our new pieces, like Briella, Makenna, Lillianna, Jasmine, and Spencer! Our Briella, shown here, comes either in black with gray cushion, or white with blue cushion, is supported by sleek dowel legs, and includes molded armrests for comfort. Buy one for the desk, or four for the dining table, or even a few for the reading nook or den!

9. Your space needs to be great for guests. Even if your pieces are quirky and small, they still need to be comfortable and perform a function.

10. Lastly, you need to be surrounded by art and books. Large scale canvas prints and mid-century style bookshelves full of books are, to you, the best decoration!

We hope you’ve enjoyed the Summer Style Series for 2015! Stay tuned for even more fun features and decor ideas from AC Pacific!

Style Series Part 7: Farmhouse Chic

7

Urban Homesteading, Homesteading, and getting back to the farm life is a huge thing right now. Did you know? Everyone these days seems to have a story about friends packing up and moving out to places where their only neighbors are a mile away…to raise chickens and pick berries. This “trend”, however, has been gaining momentum since about the middle of the last decade, it seems. People want to get back in touch with growing their own food as their right, thanks to concerns of just where our produce and meat comes from.

It’s no surprise, then, that the Farmhouse Chic trend is peeking out from the cracks between Country (read our Cozy Cabin post here) and Industrial (read our Industrial Chic post here) trends, which are both derived from the need to get back to the basics in living. To us, however, that brings back memories of watching Little House on the Prairie, where the skirts just cleared the height of the prairie grasses and home decor, of course, reflected the local environment and folk artisan treasures.

You don’t need to go so far as to owning a homestead or a farm to embrace this trend. We have a few guidelines to help you tell if it’s right for you, and how to decorate your home in this home warming trend:

1. Growing up, you’ve had pets like chickens, goats, sheep, maybe a cow or horse. Or, you really wish you did.

2. You see nothing wrong with putting your hair into two long braids, and love that Heidi braids are in style.

3. Sunflowers are your favorite flower. That, or wildflowers.

Pop beautiful flowers in a paper bag and tie with a small piece of string for a #vintage touch

4. Speaking of flowers, you were in on that flower crown trend before F21 was selling them, making them from available wildflowers.

Untitled-2

4. You love chickens, and may collect chicken themed decor.

5. Living in the “Big City” sounds awfully boring to you.

6. Food just doesn’t have flavor if it isn’t cooked in a giant cast iron pan.

7. You favor mason jars over Tupperware, and use them for everything…even Q-tip storage.

farm1

Exposed brick or even gently worn wallpaper patterns make a great backdrop for a Farmhouse Chic kitchen. Pair with some wainscoting or trim for an added effect. Well worn edges on painted pieces – doors, windowsills, furniture – give things an authentic touch. Our Paxton set pairs wood grain with metal for a farmhouse look. And don’t be afraid of decor – or chickens – because in Farmhouse Chic, the more the merrier!

8. There’s something magical, to you, about an oldschool landline and rotary phone. Extra kudos if you have one of those oldschool wall phones (see the image above).

9. You prefer handwoven items, hammered metal, tin, and wood over plastic.

10. Having a barn door in your house sounds like an awesome concept.

Summer Style Series Part 6: Tropical Getaway

6

Once upon a time, Havana was the place to be. It was in close proximity to the USA and a great place to get a drink where in the States prohibition was in effect, and it was easier to just go there to get your party on, not to mention the popularity of cigars. Americans have since been addicted to tropical locales, shifting their focus to places like Hawa’ii, Cozumel, Jamaica, and more. We all dream of a Tropical Getaway filled with white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, colorful foilage, and fruity drinks that require umbrellas.

Thankfully, the wishful thinking and the tropical glam of days gone by have come back. Tropical prints have been revamped past tacky, and no one can wait to grab their sunnies to get their summer on. If you think the Tropical trend is hot, check below to see if it might be for you:

1. You’ve probably been to Hawa’ii, but if not, have had several luau themed parties.

2. To you, the five food groups are: Mai Tais, seafood, kabobs, Corona-ritas, and pineapple.

3. You may be involved with the retro (1930s – 50s) fashion movement, but if not, have filled your closet with F21 urban tropical goods.

4. You’ve gone pineapple bowling.

5. You’re attracted to retro motel glam.

6. Moving to a place like California or Florida sounds great – long summers, hot weather, abundant sunshine!

7. In the summer, you wear your bathingsuit under your clothes, even if you go to work. Who has time to change when summer is here?

8. You’ve always liked the look of bamboo, and have wondered how patio furniture would look like indoors.

Untitled-2

A tropical setting is the perfect place for the Mia armchair. Soft, supple cushions match sleek, brown bonded leather, making it perfect for tropical accents. Toss in a few palm and hibiscus printed pillows, a naturally woven rug, and lots of wood texture. We especially loved that tropical tiger print!

9. The plants in your home aren’t ivy or ferns. They’re banana palms, orchids, and potted ginger plants.

10. You’ve gone thrifting for mid-century tiki and tropical inspired goods that others would call tacky, but know they make perfect sense in your home.

And bonus:

NPpinkflamingo5

Don’t be ashamed. We know you have a flock.

Summer Series Part 4: Coastal Style

4

Coastal style is almost a given if you live along the East Coast, West Coast, Gulf of Mexico, or along the shores of a lake. It’s hard to deny the inspiration of living near the beach, even if you live on the other side of a coastal state. The beach is a symbol for easy living, beautiful weather, sea and beach wildlife, and the nautical mysteries of the sea. But don’t feel pressured to deny yourself the pleasure of having a beach styled home if you live in a landlocked state!

Coastal and nautical styles are a big hit, and range in theme and color palette. Anyone can create a beautiful coastal theme within a room or even their entire home. Can’t decide if it is right for you? See below!

Coastal theme home decor may be for you if:

1. Frosted “sea” glass is more beautiful to you than any gemstone.

2. You love blue colors: seafoams, turquoises, navys, and aquamarines are your colors of choice!

3. A good time to you is kicking off your shoes and relaxing with a good book outside, under an umbrella.

4. Piña coladas are your cocktail of choice.

Untitled-4

5. Wearing anything more than a sandal is tedious and uncomfortable to you.

6. Starfish, dolphin, or mermaid motifs are often found in your jewelry.

7. You vacation to “the shore” during the summer.

Untitled-5

Coastal style can range from a literal interpretation to coastal cottage, and even just color inspiration. To recreate this look, join sand colored accent chairs with natural driftwood and rope textures, various shades of blue, abalone and mother of pearl accents, sailcloth, starfish, and seashells on a bare wood floor.

8. The Little Mermaid may have been your favorite movie as a kid (but if you still watch it, we won’t blame you!).

9. You love the organic structures of coral slices, starfish, and conch shells.

10. You’d go to the store in nothing but a swim suit and sandals, and not have a second thought about it!

Style Series Summer 2015 Part 3: Traditional Style

3

Traditional style will, of course, never go out of style. An updated version of a timeless classic can be an easy – an elegant – way to decorate your home. And if you want your house to feel like “a home”, this just may be the decor style for you.

How to tell if Traditional Style is the right style for your home:

1. While you enjoy your furniture having “character”, you view character as having carved or turned legs, antiqued finishes, and traditional style tufting.

2. Antiquing is a favorite pastime of yours.

3. When someone suggests a Pinterest tutorial on how to paint your inherited credenza to turn it into a shabby chic dresser, you ask them very politely to leave (perish the thought!).

Untitled-2

4. Ann Taylor and Eileen Fisher are your homegirls.

5. When there’s a party in the family, it is usually hosted at your house, even if it’s for your 2nd cousin’s 3rd baby shower.

6. Martha Stewart and O Magazine can be found on your coffee table.

7. You know that there will always be a floral print (and/or lace) that will fit right in with your decor.

traditional

Updated traditional style requires a fresh palette with a mix and match of metal and wood finishes. While other design style elements are welcome here and there, the look is better served with traditional materials and silhouettes, like our traditional bed frame.

8. Ornate decor is great, but you know that there’s a place and balance for everything.

9. Crown moulding, wainscoting, and carved trim can make any room in your home come together.

10. You have a revered tradition for every holiday, including the Super Bowl!

Style Series Summer 2015 Part 2: Industrial Chic

2 (2)

Industrial Chic took the design world by storm, and its influence can be seen throughout much of modern decor. It’s a look based on utilitarian simplicity and antique elegance, with a hint of (of course), industrial ruggedness, as if hewn from the cast offs of a 19th century ship yard. Industrial Chic has been immensely popular amongst urban loft dwellers, men, and the Steampunk aficionado, but even as Steampunk trends start to fall away, the Industrial Chic aesthetic has found a way to evolve into more niched branches.

How can you tell if Industrial Chic is for you? We’d like to say, “If you like it, you’ll find a way to make it work with what you’ve got.” Industrial Chic is such a versatile trend that it can be implemented to any degree, and with whatever you may already have on hand. But for the sake of the true Industrial Chic thread at the center of it all, check out our fun guide below to see if it might be worth looking into:

1. When we mentioned Steampunk and Industrial Chic, you didn’t immediately go Google what those terms meant, because you already knew.

2. Your favorite color is exposed brick.

3. You know that pipes are for decoration, and are not to be painted/sealed away/hidden.
1

4. You’ve probably tried to brew your own artisan ale at one point in your life.

5. Don’t even get you started on the Edison vs. Tesla debate.

6. You regularly break the rule of mixing metals on your person, and in your home.

7. Your favorite smell is leather (which seems to be a bottled scent, lucky you).

Create an industrial chic home by pairing aged wood finishes, mixed metals, leather-look upholstery, and utilitarian elements (like exposed rivets, cogs, pulleys, wires, and pipes). You want to create a look that reminds you of the industrious periods in the late 1800s and early 1900s, but without going too far into mid-century style.

8. If it doesn’t have a patina or aged treatment, it’s not worth having.

9. You’d never dream of putting a window covering over those gorgeous, aged, discolored floor-to-ceiling factory windows in your loft.

10. You are fascinated with creating things by hand, like furniture and clothing.

Style Series Summer 2015 Part 1: Bohemian

20

Summer is quickly closing in on us, and with that, we’d like to look at some of the bigger design styles of 2015. Through the next few blog posts, we’ll show you different styles, and help you decide if any one of them is the right style for you!

First, let’s talk about the ever popular bohemian style.

How to Tell if Bohemian Style is For You:

1

1. Stevie Nicks or Phoebe Buffay is your spirit animal, and you totally know what a spirit animal is.

2. True tribal silver is the only silver you wear.

3. You found yourself confused when “festival looks” became popular, and everyone started dressing like you.

4. You know the difference between a hippy and hipster, and you are not a hipster.

5. Any (or all) of these apply to you:

tumblr_n818rqnY9q1r0ecmfo1_1280

6. You might have Pisces, Aquarius, or Gemini in your chart, and know exactly what sign in your chart they occupy.

7. You know that pattern matching is a guideline, not a rule, and you ignore it rather well.

2

Try a rich hued wood against the mix of patterns and textures that the Boho Chic style calls for.

8. The more layers on your person/bed/floor, the better.

9. Tassels, beads, feathers, and flowers are not tacky to you, they’re required.

10. Your decor accessories are acquired from your travels around the continent/globe, and each piece has a rich story worth telling.

AC Pacific at High Point: Trends in Motion Furniture 2015

AC Pacific Trends in Motion Furniture 2015

Motion furniture (recliners, sofabeds, and storage furniture) has come a long way from that overstuffed recliner your relative refuses to get rid of. Gone are the wood handled reclining mechanisms and yucky floral fabrics (often topped with a doily): today’s motion furniture offerings are high tech, tailored, and constructed of comfort and convenience.

Take a look at what you may have been missing:

ACP_WES_1

Our new Wes looks like any other motion sofa…but this piece is full of neat surprises!

1. Cup Holders & Extra Storage

Standard features for some, extra cool newness for others. Most motion furniture offerings come with both cup holders and storage these days. This convenience extends past center consoles, however. Center seats now pull down to expose polished table tops, complete with cup holders. Storage can now be found in side pockets, in chair arms, and other hidden compartments. No more loose remote control collections wandering about!

2. Power Outlets, Cell Phone Chargers, and USB Ports

Your house may have outlets everywhere, but motion sofas believe you should have maybe a few more. Tricked out pieces can sport outlets in storage compartments and pull down center panels. These same storage compartments can even house phone charging docks and USB ports so all your electronic devices can remain within reach.

IMG_20150422_104751

Pull down the center console on Wes, and lift the headrest, to reveal reading lights, power outlets, USB ports, a table top, and cup holders! The headrests adjust with power controls on the arms.

3. Adjustable Headrests & Massage

Along with power reclining, today’s motion furniture can include adjustable headrests to accommodate all heights of guests. Some pieces may even include massaging features, so that you can reach a new level of relaxation!

4. Reading Lights & Speakers

Trying to read in the dark can put a strain on your eyes. Just flip up the center console headrest and viola! Two overhead reading lights are available for trying to find that remote in the dark, and, oh, reading. And if you need just a little more boost out of your surround sound, some motion styles now include speakers!

IMG_20150419_131347

Owen mixes traditional comfort of motion sofas with a masculine, simplistic style. Gussets and style panels add to the classy but rugged feel of this piece.

5. New Fabrications & Modern Styling

Did we mention ugly florals and doilies? Modern furniture of today comes in all sorts of sleek coverings: reconstituted leather, leatherette, soft weave fabrics, and varying grades of real leather. Overstuffed, shapeless forms are now molded into expertly tailored style lines, gussets, and insets. Modern style details like nailheads and contemporary fabrics add a special touch for the trendy decorator. What was once considered tacky has now been reinvented to sleek, classy, and modern!

TISHA_landing

Tisha features a storage compartment in the chaise section, along with modern styled lines for a contemporary look.

With all this going for this category, you’re bound to find something for your home to fit your tastes!

China International Furniture Fair 2015 Trends

 CIFF (3)

We spent last week in Guangzhou, China, at the China International Furniture Fair (CIFF), the largest expo in China for home furnishings. While there, we were able to get a glimpse of upcoming trends from the Asian markets. This year’s offerings placed an emphasis on small space living, and utilizing hidden aspects of well designed furniture. Here are some of our favorites:

1. New takes on futons.

The hard metal frames and uncomfortable, thin mattresses of the past were nowhere to be seen at CIFF. In their place were soft, upholstered chairs that transformed into beds by either pulling down the backrest to reveal a level sleeping space, or by unfolding the seat to create a soft, foam mattress.
futon2futon

2. Marble accents on accent pieces.

Marble is the new granite these days, it seems. It’s also showing up on accent furniture in understated ways – the inside of a table leg, a block along the front of a console, the top of a table. It adds a classy touch without being overpowering or turning a home into something reminiscent of a Parthenon.

3. Classy matte and clear plastic.

Plastic used to be reserved for lawn and children’s seating. Now, with new finishes and designs, it is made classy enough for the modern dining table, office, and even as living room accent pieces. And while acrylic chairs are not anything new, they’ve been revamped to include latticework and geometrical shapes to keep the trend going.

4. Coated metals.

Chrome, powder coated, antiqued, and brushed metal finishes took a back seat to gleaming white coated metal tables, consoles, bedroom sets, and chairs.

We of course enjoyed our stay in China, and were amazed with all there was to do and see!
